A Word of Grace

Go ahead and grab a seat just for a moment. Before I pray, as we were participating in communion, I couldn’t help but wonder how a series like this affects those who have already been through the pain of divorce.

The thing that just came to my heart, which I wanted to share, is that I want to make sure those of you who have already crossed that line feel the love of God and the grace of God. I think it is easy to teach a series like the one we just taught and have it feel incredibly guilt-ridden for those who have been divorced. I want to encourage you: our intent is simply to show a picture of what God wants for marriage.

Moving Forward in Faith

For those of you who have already been divorced, if reconciliation is an option, I want to encourage you to pursue that. I believe God is a Reconciler; that is what He does. But if you have already crossed that line and you have remarried, I want you to have the best marriage you can ever have for the glory of God.

There are few issues we could talk about that are more convicting or more potentially dicey than the issue of divorce and remarriage. As we teach a series like this, it is easy to lose sight of the brokenness that is among us. So, I just wanted to make sure you feel the grace of God and the privilege we have to serve a God who makes old things new.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB)

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, [he is] a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

For the marriages that are here, we want to be healthy—as healthy as we can be to bring glory to Christ. And if you have already been divorced, we want you to feel the grace of God, because God loves you regardless of where you are at.

A Prayer for Our Marriages

Let me pray for us.

Father, we thank You for grace and for the privilege to be Yours. As we have now remembered You in communion, we just draw our attention to You. We pray for mercy, and for Your grace to be sufficient in our weakness.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NASB)

And He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

We pray that You would buoy our spirits and lift us up from this moment forward to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please You in all respects, and to bear fruit in every good deed. We pray that we would be continually increasing in the knowledge of God.

Colossians 1:10 (NASB)

so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please [Him] in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

We ask this for Your glory, Your honor, and Your renown, and for the exaltation of marriage in its purest form. We lift it all up to You and pray that You would be honored by it. In Christ’s name, Amen.
